St. Thomas Composting Program

St. Thomas Composting Program

Composting is a large part of our diversion from landfill program. Organics make up close to 45% of the waste stream. The goal is to remove the best quality of these organic items from the waste stream to be processed into a useable soil enhancing product. The City of St. Thomas contracted organics collection as part of its waste management plan in 1994 due to the exceptional diversion results of the pilot project.

Compostable items for the residential program in St. Thomas include:

- All garden waste - brush can be no thicker than your thumb and no longer than your forearm
- All leaves, plant waste, grass and roots
- Raw vegetable leaves and potato peelings
