LACHENAIE, QUEBEC, Jul 9, 2003 (CCNMatthews via COMTEX) --
LACHENAIE LANDFILL RECOGNIZED AS PART OF SOLUTION
BFI Canada Income Fund (TSX: BFC.UN) announced today that its subsidiary, BFI Usine de Triage Lachenaie Ltd., welcomes the statements today by the Minister of the Environment, Mr. Thomas J. Mulcair, that he is evaluating a long-term waste management strategy for the Greater Montreal Region.
'We are very pleased to learn that the Minister and his department are developing long-term, regional strategies to meet the needs of the Greater Montreal Region for cost-effective and environmentally safe non-hazardous solid waste disposal,'said Yves Normandin, Vice President, BFI Usine de Triage Lachenaie Ltd. 'As the Minister indicated today, our Lachenaie facility is state-of-the-art and operated to the highest standards, making it an important part of the solution to the Greater Montreal Region's non-hazardous solid waste management challenges in the years ahead. We are gratified that he went on to say that he regards the site as one of the best not only in the Greater Montreal Region but in all of North America.'
Lachenaie is an ideal site based on its geography and technical characteristics which include over ten meters of underlying waterproof clay that acts like a vault to prevent leakage from the site.
'We were delighted to learn that the approval process regarding the further development of the Lachenaie landfill is moving forward in the context of the long-term needs of the Greater Montreal Community', said Keith Carrigan, President and Chief Executive of BFI Canada. 'As the Minister and his officials continue their review, we will continue to offer them our fullest support.'
The Company indicated that it would review the report of the public hearing office on the environment (BAPE) that was released this morning which included a recommendation that the site continue for a period of five years as a vital part of the municipal infrastructure. Taking into account the public interest, the Company will provide its comments to the Minister in the near future. The Company will work with all stakeholders, locally and regionally, to ensure that the site will continue to be operated to the highest standards, as it has in the past, and in a way that serves the public interest.
The Greater Montreal Region has relied upon the safety and environmental integrity of the Lachenaie site for 35 years to help meet its non-hazardous solid waste management needs. The site is well equipped to continue to be an important part of the Region's essential infrastructure in the future and has a spotless record of environmental safety.
